Research Scientist and Software Engineer
Research expertise and interests:
Machine learning, neural networks, atmospheric remote sensing, DOAS methods, software engineering.
Education:
Master (civil engineer) in Computer Science, UCLouvain (2005-2007)
MSc in Mathematics, UCLouvain (2000-2004)Short biography:
Pierre joined BIRA-IASB in 2023, to work on two projects: the ground-based NO2 Camera and the ALTIUS satellite. His responsabilities mainly focus on the data analysis and AI aspects involved in remote sensing with both instruments.
He is a mathematician and computer engineer specialized in artificial intelligence, graduated from UCLouvain. His 15 years of professional background in data science and machine learning also reflect this hybrid profile combining science and engineering.
His scientific experience consists in one year as FRS-FNRS fellow and 7 years working at DNAlytics, a university spin-off. There he worked in many industrial research projects for medical diagnosis in collaboration with academic research teams, and he co-authored a dozen peer-reviewed papers.
In addition, Pierre has also spent an important part of his career as a machine learning engineer and consultant in start-up companies. His role involved all steps of data analysis projects: from understanding the client’s needs to explaining the final model, including all technical intermediary steps such as machine learning methodology, model design, Linux system setup, reproducible experimental setup, data cleaning and denoising, etc.
Having worked several years with big companies in strongly regulated sectors (pharma and rail), he also has a strong experience in organizational methods and tools useful for larger projects.
